What's a zine?
Creativity & the printed output
A zine (pronounced zeen) is a small circulation, self published printed publication of any sort and on any subject, often created by hand, by photocopying or by using digital tools.
Historically created by politically radical individuals and collectives to share ideas or interests deemed unfit to be published by more traditional mainstream outlets, zines are now made by anyone for any reason.
Zines have a DIY ethos and independent spirit and often consist of a mixture of text and images.
Experimentation and innovation are important aspects of my work, and these I feel fit well into the playful creative spirit of zine making.
In February 2023 I had an online audio interview with Euan Ross of Biblioscapes.com in which I talked about zines and my approach to my own zine making. The interview discussion can be heard here: https://biblioscapes.com/in-discussion/julius-smit
